Camp Bastion Marathon - Event update

Up & Running have been keeping up the support of events and charities again but this time a little further afield.  South Central Asia!!

We supported the Camp Bastion Marathon organised by Extreme Energy .  The event attracted 411 runners, rasied over £12,000 for the charities, and was a huge success. It was apparently mentioned in dispatches from the theatre to the UK, which is remarkable due to the communications problems and operational security, but word has got out of its success.

Here is a photo of some of the racers (slippery participants)

and a video from British Forces News (You Tube).

We are proud to sponsor Extreme Energy and the participants of their events.  People who are doing a tough job in a tough climate, and are living proof that the need to run is a very strong motivator what ever the environment.

Is there a need for running socks?

We often get asked in store 'should I wear a technical running sock'? When we say yes this can be occasionally look upon as a cleverly disguised 'selling ploy', but honestly it isn't.

We believe that there are 2 key things (3 if you are a woman) that you need to make your running as comfortable and pleasant as possible.

First and foremost you need a running shoe, this is essential if you are to have comfortable and stress free running. Secondly a running bra is needed if you are a lady, and thirdly a good pair of running socks is important. But why?
Technical running socks can help to prevent blisters by reducing the friction between your foot and the lining of the shoe.
Technical running socks are made from yarns that wick perspiration from the feet and keep them dry. This increases comfort but again reduces the risk of friction.
Technical running socks do not wear as quickly as non technical socks. There is nothing worse that a sock feeling like the bottom of a budgies bird cage.
Technical running socks are available in a variety of different thickness's and styles. This again helps fit your foot into the shoe. If you shoe is slightly neat or loose, this can be adjusted by the thickness of a sock.
Finally, a technical running sock complements a technical running shoe - you wouldn't put remoulds on a ferrari! Some one (a rep I believe it was) once used the phrase 'a sock is the interface between the shoe and foot - the foot shoe interface'. It may be a rough way of seeing it but he was right that the conduit to comfortable shoes and as a result comfortable running is the sock.

Below is some feedback from customers who have worn one brand of running socks (although there are many), this is what they said....

'I have run over a 1000 miles in my socks and whilst they cost more than cheaper non technical socks last ten times longer and are far more comfortable'
On the face of it the five pack supermarket socks are a lot cheaper than technical socks, but they wear out a lot quicker, do not wash well and do not offer any of the qualities of technical socks, so are really a false economy'.
'What is the point of spending seventy pound plus on a pair of good running shoes and then wearing a cheap pair of cotton socks which can cause a blister?!'

So when you are asked,'do you want any running socks?', don't think its a selling ploy we genuinely want you to enjoy your running.

Mizuno Prophecy - Don't predict the Future..... Make it

Up & Running are proud to be involved with the launch of a new revolutionary shoe from Mizuno - the Prophecy.  On April 2nd it will be nationally launched in 3 U&R stores (Belfast, Birmingham and Leeds Central).  And on the day we will be offering not just advice and support on the shoe there will be a give away also.  We have already whet your appetite with the shoe 'teaser', and we are now pleased to show you the shoe in all its glory.

So if you are looking for a neutral shoe with all the cushioning in the world and are keen to try something revolutionary then the Mizuno Wave Prophecy could be for you.  Get yourself down to Belfast, Birmingham and Leeds Central and take part in the Mizuno event of the year.

TuffNutz - thanks from the organiser

Up and Running Liverpool are proud to sponsor a series or races from the Seaside runs organiser Roy Fisher, and below is a recent email from him thanking us (and others) for the team effort put into the event. We are proud to support Roy and his team and hope that you will look up Pensbyrunners (Tuffnutz) and take part in the event.

Hi everyone,
Well that's another TuffNutz over and again it was a great success. Well done to all those who helped before and during the event. There were 49 marshals involved officially with one or two extras appearing on the day. We also had 6 members running in our teams and all on a day when we had a great (and successful) turn-out at the Liverpool Half Marathon!
Having Marshall Teams with a leader responsible for their area seems to be a great way of marshalling a large and widespread event such as this. It is great to see us all come together to create such a Club effort. I know that the competitors think the event is great but many also mention the friendly and helpful marshals. I'll publish some of the comments soon. I reckon that 40 teams is at our maximum but that generates so much interest and support. The Start field was heaving during the race and at the end. Joints and Points not only sponsored the event but provided free massage for weary runners.
If any of you have taken photos or video as requested at the TuffTasks or en route then can you get them to me as soon as possible. Email them or put them on a CD or a memory stick or even your camera card and I'll get them onto the website. Iain Arnison will be making a short video again to encapsulate the day.
Congrats to all the competitors for finishing and the winners for being the best. Our Ladies team, Pensby Galz, won the Lady category again so we need three in a row next year!
Many thanks to our sponsors for money, Goody Bag stuff and Spot prizes - Up & Running, GlaxoSmithKline (Lucozade Sport), Coca-Cola, Britvic, Runners Sports, John West Foods, Joints & Points Healthcare, Parfetts and of course a special mention for the Goody bag team (Steve, Phil, Ceri, Cath and Karen) who made 240 rolls and assembled all the stuff in 120 bags on Saturday. A big thank you too for St. John's Ambulance who were out and about on the course and thankfully weren't needed. A donation will be winging its way to them.
I just have to revamp and update the TuffNutz part of the website and sort out all the results. then it's thinking about next year!
Next big events are the Multi-terrain over a lot of the TuffNutz course on May 10th and also our 25 year celebration dinner-dance. We will be pushing tickets hard from now on so make sure you are free on May 21st.
Thanks for all your support for 'the best running club around'
Roy

Here's to a great event, a great club and to another successful race.  Roll on next year.

What is CaniX?

As runners we can often get a little board of the 'same old same old' running that we do. Pounding out the concrete only to come home and then find that you have to take the dog out to cool down. Well there may be a solution to this and something that kills 2 birds with one stone. CaniX. CaniX (www.cani-cross.co.uk)
Eh? Whats that I hear all of your cry. Well CaniX is running with your dog. (canine + cross-country = CaniX). Simples!! Note to Ed: there seems to be a lot of animal references in this piece and not all the right breed
CaniX cater for all shapes and sizes, any breed and all fitness levels — canine and human. Humans from the age of seven and dogs from the age of one onwards can enter. At certain events, short courses are set for under elevens to enter on the day (not for competition though).
Previous events have included vision impaired entrants running with a human guide, hearing impaired entrants running with their Hearing Dogs, people who have had a triple heart by pass, 10km/ marathon/ ultra-endurance athletes, to kids, have-a-goes and those that just love to do things with their dogs.
CaniX is a brilliant way to get out in the fresh air and spend time with your dog. You and your dog can enjoy the peace and tranquility of your surroundings and get in shape at the same time with an invigorating workout. Plus you don't have to cool down after a run and get that obligatory post run chill.
There is no handicap for the breed of dog as, regardless of breed, most dogs can run faster than their human team mate. Just check out my Greyhound!!
You don’t need to be super fit, it’s for all levels (again just check my greyhound!!). Take it easy at first and build up slowly, alternate between walk/run. You could enter the 2.5km ‘Have-a-go class’ and when you feel comfortable try the 5km.

No real special equipment or training is needed. Many however choose to harness their dog’s pulling power and chase instinct with a dog running harness, waist belt and line. This is more comfortable for both you and your dog and gives you extra assistance (handy for the hills)! Dogs soon learn the difference between their collar and their running harness – understanding that they can pull with one and not the other. The running harness directs all the pulling power to the dog’s chest and shoulders away from the neck.
So to recap CaniX helps:
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle for you and your dogs.
  • Strengthens the bond between you and your dogs.
  • Can be enjoyed by all ages, male or female.
  • Is a versatile sport that can be practised anywhere.
Why not have a go. If nothing else it will make you run faster, or will it be drag!!

Podcasts - One for the runners out there.

On my longer runs, I often listen to podcasts, this can range from religion, current affairs, comedy and business.  But the ones that I particularly go back to are the running based ones. If you are technically minded then a podcast is a non-streamed webcast based on a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. The word usurped webcast in common vernacular, the word podcast is made famous from iPod due to rising popularity and the innovation of web feeds. For the less technically minded indeed the average 'joe' a podcast is basically conversation and/or dialogue that is downloaded and played in the same way that music is (using a MP3 player). I thought it would be good to write a small piece on what I listened to from time to time and why.

http://www.steverunner.com/ The description on one site is 'thoughts, opinions, observations and rambling diatribes composed during distance long runs'. Actually Steve Runner is a great podcast to listen to. His podcast, Phedippidations is a very informative and interesting listen. Full of stores, personal trials and tribulations as well as the musings of a middle-of-the-pack distance runner. Its well worth a listen.  I love this one, although it is a little 'American' (no offence meant).
http://hearzenrun.blogspot.com/ Adam Tinkoff is also commonly known as the ‘The Zen Runner’.  He has, like Steve Runner, a very funny and has a conversational approach to his work. It draws you in. It has a slight American bias again, but you still get to feel what it is like to share a journey with someone who is training for a marathon (or two). Let him join you on your runs - do it together.
http://www.marathontalk.com/ This show is about and for marathon runners. Their description covers it perfectly. 'Hear from other marathon runners, race directors, medical professionals and suppliers about running marathons'. The show features segments that are dedicated to upcoming races, training programs, equipment and stories about how the marathon has changed people’s lives. Very inspirational stuff.

So there you go. If you are interested in having a change from listening to the same old music tracks and fancy having some one along for the ride (and the long runs), then check out the podcasts above. In fact you could, if you are inspired, take it one stage further and have a go yourself down the line.

Racing round up

With a staff team that is made up a keen runners (or all types and standards - I'm one of the slow ones!!) here is an update on some of their recent running achievements.
Martin (Manchester): Currently not running due to virus (8 weeks) However, I have a half marathon booked in May and I will do a PB. I will be aiming for 85 mins. So, the training starts soon. I intend on running home from work as part of this training to get the mileage up.
Adam(Manchester): I have not run competitively for a few years, however I am a keen surfer and run to maintain a good base fitness for my sporadic surf trips (usually about one weekend per month). However I am currently upping the mileage with the aim of improving my fitness for a week-long surf trip to Morocco in late April. I also plan on competing in the Manchester Sumo run in July.
Neil(Manchester): After various problems since the start of the year (Chest & toe infection) I am now trying to get fully fit again. Usually run 60-70 miles a week. As for races I am doing a half marathon in May hopefully pb under 74 mins.
Graham(Manchester): Currently trying to overcome a slight niggle in my left leg and hopefully won't be out of action for too long. My main aim is to improve my track PB's in the 800m & 1500m. In an effort to do so i am going to Portugal for 2 weeks, with Trafford AC, for a warm weather training trip.
Paul (Keswick): Off out to Malaga (WC 21st March 2011) to work on a new trail run for Oct, Competing (half marathon) in Isle of Wight in the International Island Games in June, Guaranteed New York marathon place for Nov with qualifying time for age category
Pete (Cheltenham)I did the Barcelona Marathon at the weekend and did a pb of 3.59 :-)

Race For Life - a reason to take part

With the race for life events just round the corner I thought I would just bring awareness of the events to the fore.  I asked a friend to put down some thoughts on why she took part in Race for Life.  Here are her words.....

I have always liked running, I only ran for myself and never had any thoughts of running with a Club. Running on your own makes you feel free and when you run for yourself you are only competing with one person.
However, about 15 years ago I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer this was such a blow and for a little while I felt very negative,  but with the wonderful treatment and help I received at the hospital I was finally pronounced clear after 5 years,  I was also supported by a Breast Cancer nurse who gave me valuable advice and a positive outlook. I know also that over the past number of years more and more people are recovering and going on to live long and happy lives due to generosity of people who support the Charity, this also gives you hope all will be well.
I was asked by the Company I worked for to run in a team of people to support Cancer Research – of course I jumped at the chance.  It was a very hot sunny day in Hull, there were 8,000 women running, virtually all of  were running for Mums, Dads, brother, sisters etc.  I had met a girl in hospital who was only 34 and  she wasn't as lucky as me, so I was running for my dear friend Michelle.  It was utterly overwhelming, the atmosphere was electric and when I wasn't crying I was filled with humility. That time I raised £380, but that wasn't really the point, everyone, everywhere is touched by this terrible disease and if we can help at all this is a great way to do it, to be part of the ‘team’.
I have run virtually every year since, and each time am filled with awe at the bravery of people and if we can eradicate this disease by raising money in this way I shall run until I am 90!!  Hopefully!
I think you will all agree Race for Life is such an amazing event for a great cause.

Foam roller stretching - relieve ITB

A while back a personal trainer that we have a close relationship at Up and Running Headingley sent us an email about foam rollers and it made me use mine alot more.

I use a foam roller every morning after my run and have noticed a big difference in the recovery of my legs, I have always suffered with a tight IT band mainly because I run like a girl and let my knees roll in as I run, this puts my knees under some stress and I think keeping on top of my IT has really helped... the first time I used it it was not pleasant!  Made me go slightly rosey cheeked but after the first few days it eased and now its just a case of maintaining it.

The foam rollers may seem expensive for a piece foam but its like having a home physio, and they are made out high density foam so they retain shape and yet soft enough to not cause damage.

Below is a video from Mike @ Creating Chaos (Headingly) about how best to use the foam rollers

    Dewsbury 10k - Race review

After a winter of delayed or cancelled races and running off road to avoid icy areas , I was very keen to get back on the road and get in some good performances before London marathon in April. Myself and a friend from Swaledale running club (and shop regular I must add) headed off to Dewsbury for the annual Dewsbury 10km road run. A notoriously fast course and with one of the highest quality fields in north  it is ofton a favourite for pbs.It was also a good opportunity for me to christen my nice new Mizuno  wave Ronin 3 racing flats. Looking at the sky I was fairly hopefully and was feeling in fine fettle. After a slight stumble on the start line , I settled in and was feeling fairly good....until at around 5km we were met by very strong winds. Struggling on though hoping to get wind behind me on the return. Coming back through 7ish km were met by the same strong wind. Despite the wind I soldiered on and strangely strong. Confident I must have got a pb and just dipped under 33 mins purely by the runners around me , I was then a tad disappointed to see the clock just tick over 34.19 as I crossed the line. As I walked amongst the finishers most people seemed about a minute down on usual performance (even at the top end). I think that pb is just around the corner after all.It was also great to get back to Dewsbury 10km after missing it last year and is always a great organised race with fantastic support from the locals.  With a warm down done and journey back home fairly quick due to races early start. I was back home for before lunch. Quick shower - town -pub -burger-  pint. All round successful day.

    Brass Monkey - Race report

Up and running YORK  was proud yet again to support the famous YORK BRASS MONKEY HALF MARATHON. We were there on hand to provide gels and bars to give runners that early morning / mid race boost from our stall. As per usual it was a wee bit nippy so gloves a plenty were sold. Although not as cold as usually it was still chilly (most notably to me standing on the stall), but the sky was clear of gloom with the usual cross winds o the road out to Appleton Roebuk. As usual it was a great success and seemed to be enjoyed by all. Darren Bilton flew the flag for up and running coming in , in 6th place.
Yet again the course record was smashed by a relative unknown amongst the hoards of regular brass monkeys, Paul Martelletti in an amazing 65.21. Well done to all runners and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

    Are you a Total Warrior?

    Dear Lunatic

I was summonsed by the 'Chief' of Total Warrior this week and after some persuasion (30 sec's he's a scary bloke) he persuaded me to go out as advanced guard to see if I could rally the troupes to take on this ultimate challenge.  In order to participate.  You need to be fit, healthy, fully signed up to medical cover, have no fear (and no sensation), be able to endure enormous discomfort and if you are a bloke not be afraid to cry!!  If you can cover all of the above, then this event could be for you.  Check out the site www.totalwarrior.co.uk and take out your brain and sign up.

XR Crossmax review - Paul Wathan (U&R Keswick)

    Salomon XR Crossmax

Recently I have had the pleasure to test the new XRs, and yes it was a great pleasure! The shoe does exactly what it says on the box 'Door to Trail'

Living in the Lake District offers some of the best running trails around. But the only downside is that most people have to run along a road to get to these great trails and trust me the average off road shoe hurts after a couple of mile on the road before hitting the trails. For the people who don't want to go out and buy two pairs of shoes (Road & Off Road) solution  = Salomon XR Crossmax

The Crossmax is a great shoe for combination running, I was previously a great fan of the Speedcross for this type of running, but the Crossmax takes it to the next level the rubber compound used for the outsole is very durable and offers great traction for the trails with the help of the ever reliable Contagrip. The cushioning within this shoe is amazing and is also helped by a very comfortable OrthoLite insole. The upper of this shoe is soft and very breathable which helps extract the water out (when you end up in them deep puddles!). Salomon have kept with the ever reliable Quicklace system, with friction free eyelets to help with durability of the laces. Last but not least another impressive feature of this great shoe is the SensiFlex over the top front of the shoe, this technology is brilliant for adapting to the foot, and removes the hard digging in feeling at the side of the foot when flexed as some shoes do!

The shoe comes in two styles neutral and guidance, for the people who severely overpronate, its not the best! The dual density eva for the pronation control could be a little longer under the foot and a little harder maybe??
Overall in my opinion and experience of this shoe, this is a  highly recommended shoe. 8 out of 10 scoring.

    Paul Wathan (U&R Keswick)

Door to trail ... One of the footwear options - XR Crossmax

If you are wondering what shoe may be for you to do your 50/50 training and to get you comfortably to and through your off road route, then this is perhaps a shoe for you.  There will be an independent product review from us soon, but for a flavor of what the shoe is about.  Check this out ....
Looks good eh?  U&R review of the shoe to follow soon.

    The Salomon XR Crossmax

The Salomon XR Crossmax..... a shoe to be reckoned with!

The XR Crossmax is Salomon's latest addition to a range that is already well established in off road running circles. This shoe, a light weight offering, is one that brings to the party exceptional grip, great responsiveness and all in a light weight chassis. It sets out to cross that tricky precipice of shoes that are road > trail and then trail > road – a place which has been a tricky domain for shoes in recent times, but we strongly believe that this will become entrenched in off road running folk law. Don't believe me check then out the video and see what others thought on the launch day in Annecy.

Marathon Tips - essential kit list

If you are running a Marathon this year then below is a list of some of the most essential items you will need to help you achieve your Marathon goals.  The list is by no means exhaustive but it is a good starting point for you to think about what you will need for your big day.

*The Right Shoes - Your big day is very very important.  If you have made it through the training then you don't want to ruin the day with ill fitting shoes.  If you have had gait analysis from experienced staff then they will ensure that the shoes will fit you.  If you are looking for race day shoes then go to a store that a) you feel comfortable with and b) where you know you are going to be talked through the options.
*Timex Global Trainer - A great piece of kit, easy to use, multi-function training tool that will track your progress during the preceding months to the day of reckoning.
*Socks - These can make or break an event. The right socks can help prevent blisters and ensure extra cushioning.  Make sure that they are washed before your big day and that they fit well.
*Garmin Forerunner 110 - A brilliant tool for accurately recording speed, distance, heart rate and more; with the look and feel of a regular sports watch.  This will keep you on track during the event.
*The Ultimate guide to marathon running - A suberb, concise and informative magbook full of top tips to help you train and reach your goals.
*Sports Bra - An essential item for all female runners.  A female runner needs 3 essential pieces of kit.  Shoes, socks and a good sports bra.
*Energy gels & Gel carrier - Easy to comsume on the go, for when you need that extra energy boost.  Great for race day and great for training.
*Suitable Running clothing - Lightweight and breathable range of clothes will help you train and race, whatever the conditions.  Make sure that you train in winter in clothing that will protect you from the elements and for race day, make sure that you have kit that you are comfortable in.  The event could be long and clothing that isn't right, could make it a whole lot longer.
*Race belt/Number belt - Saves tearing holes in your vest with safety pins!
